Fan Code of Conduct for Local Sports Events

The San Diego Hall of Champions and the San Diego Sports Commission (SDSC) which includes representatives of the San Diego Chargers, San Diego Padres, San Diego Sockers, San Diego State University, University of San Diego, UC San Diego, Point Loma Nazarene University and CIF San Diego Section have proposed a universal Fan Code of Conduct designed to complement and enhance policies already in place with most local teams and at most local venues.

“Our goal is to ensure a quality spectator experience for fans of youth, high school, collegiate and professional sports throughout the region. Hopefully, this San Diego Sports Fan Code of Conduct, which is intended to address behavior that detracts from a positive spectator experience, will serve as a reminder that in addition to the loyalty, passion and knowledge every fan brings to the game, individual responsibility and common sense are necessary as well,” said Mike McDowell president of the San Diego Sports Commission.

A fan code of conduct is designed to set clear expectations and encourage a spectator environment that is enjoyable for all fans. The San Diego Sports Commission endeavors to promote responsible behavior and make the fan experience family friendly, memorable and positive for spectators of all ages for all sports. Individual, teams, venues and facilities may adopt their own specific code and/or provide additional provisions to the standard code based on local circumstances or preferences. Each team or venue will appropriately communicate its code of conduct to season-ticket holders and fans through mailings, online, and in-stadium signage, and other messages.

“For the San Diego Padres, this common code of conduct only reinforces our commitment to an extraordinary fan experience and family-friendly environment,” said Mike Dee president and CEO of the Padres. “Creating that experience while positively serving over two million fans annually requires the cooperation of all parties. This code provides a clearly communicated framework to support that cooperation.”

“We are not attempting to replace any existing codes of conduct but hope that this focused and fan-friendly version will enhance fan involvement and serve to underscore the fact that breaking any of these common sense rules may subject violators to ejection or arrest,” said McDowell.

“As the Chargers Fan Code of Conduct states, we are committed to creating a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable experience for all fans, both in the stadium and in the parking lot at Qualcomm Stadium,” said AG Spanos, executive vice president  and chief executive officer of the Chargers. “We want all fans attending our games to enjoy the experience in a responsible fashion and we enthusiastically support this effort to develop and promote a culture of sports fan courtesy and positive conduct throughout the region.”

The San Diego Sports Commission serves as the region’s only sports event development, marketing and sales organization. Since its creation more than 50 years ago, SDSC has evolved into the cornerstone for all sports-related activities, events and conventions in San Diego. The organization strives to present the city as the premier destination for sporting events and to contribute to the region’s economic sustainability through sports.
